Hi guys!! Welcome to my blog!! Here you'll find an array of random posts (mainly about food), so if you're a bit of a foody & would like to see where I like to eat out, what I do in my spare time, or what I've been up to work-wise, make sure you keep coming back for more!

Fratelli Fresh (Bridge Street Sydney CBD).
An overcast Sydney day made for a good excuse to head-out for an Italian-inspired feast at Fratelli Fresh (Bridge St)...
One of my very favourite places to frequent was actually the old Fratelli Fresh on Danks St, so I was really looking forward to visiting this one...
I have to say (& dare I say that this was probably purposeful to add to the restaurant's character) that the signage or restaurant itself is not obvious... You could easily walk past & not even notice it`s there! After you've finished playing Sherlock Holmes, you'll see the large door... This door opens out onto a set of stairs, which lead you down & into the underground restaurant...
There are no fruit & vegetable sales or forklifts buzzing around like the old Dank Street site, but the atmosphere here makes up for that. The dimly-lit room is surprisingly enticing. It was like entering a private den, whisking you away from the heavy hustle of the city!
With plenty of tables scattered around & a long marble bar overlooking the open kitchen, you're already spoilt for seating choice...
We were greeted by a friendly waitress who let us sit/prop at the bar. (I like to watch the chefs in action & see a few dishes go out before making my selections)... It`s like free entertainment watching an open kitchen. If they are not too busy, I sometimes get chatting to the chefs to ask what they are putting in things- Always good to pick up a few new tricks over lunch!
We ordered the pork special, ($22) which was a decent sized salad of mixed shaved cabbage, slices of crisp roast pork belly, caramelised pear & seeded mustard dressing- A lot like Christmas all rolled into one (in salad form) !! Great taste / texture & was a nice, light take on pork belly- which can at times be very heavy.
The second item we ordered was the mozzarella with grilled vegetables, fresh mint & chilli ($15). This sounded great on paper, but lacked a little when it arrived... I was imagining brightly coloured grilled vegetables with fresh mint & creamy, stringy buffalo torn over the top. What arrived was a small plate of dull coloured grilled mushroom & eggplant, with a few strips of buffalo torn over the top. It wasn`t terrible, just not what I had imagined reading off the menu.
After sitting & watching the kitchen for a while, I had seen many plates of the meatballs leave the kitchen. I have also heard many people rave about them & thought it was time to give them a go...
The infamous FF meatballs came on a bed of fettucini, however as I'm not super keen on pasta, (or having to burn off the carbs, truth be known) the chefs kindly sent us 3 large meatballs (minus the pasta) in a pool of rich tomato sauce drizzled with shavings of parmesan cheese... They were as good as everybody had said!! Super tasty & very juicy...Full of flavour! I don't have a Nonna, but if I did, these would be the meatballs I compare all others too!!
I was keen to know what made them so good, so I got chatting to the chef (who was actually busy mixing-up another batch for their dinner service)... Loads of fresh hard herbs & plenty of Parmesan cheese in the mixture apparently!! Yum!! I also think some fresh ricotta helped keep them so light... I shall try this out one day.
We washed down our lunch with a few very nice glasses of red wine, (we were having Italian after all) not to mention...Why drink water when the wine's only $3.50 a glass!! Madness...
To sum it up, I loved the underground atmosphere, the hustle from the open-kitchen & the quirky low-lights. The service was both quick & friendly (perfect if you're rushing back to the office) & I even got a few cooking tips from the chefs so I'll definitely be returning to Fratelli Fresh- & not just for the cheap red wine!
